Monadnock Region

Tucked in the lower western corner of New Hampshire is the Monadnock Region, known for its billowing hills and quaint towns exhibiting 100 years of history. The region is home to century-old town halls, meeting houses and antique shops with a country inn atmosphere. The biggest attraction is Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, a popular mountain with a spectacular view of the Boston skyline from the summit. Art enthusiasts should head over to MacDowell Colony – the nation’s oldest artist community located in Peterborough which inspired the work of famous authors Mark Twain, Willa Cather and Louisa May Alcott. You can even experience some world culture by perusing artifacts in the Mariposa Museum, housed in a restored Baptist church building with educational and interactive exhibits. Next, saunter over to Keene's Colonial Theatre highlighting classical music, film, theater and comedy. If feeling nostalgic, visit Pickity Place in Mason; the 1786 cottage inspired illustrations in “Little Red Riding Hood”. While you're at it go to Parker's Maple Barn best known for delicious maple syrup made the old-fashioned way. Interested in viewing excellent craftsmanship? Spend time at Frye's Measure Mill browsing the Shaker and Colonial boxes created there since 1858. Further cater to your senses by going to the 16-acre grove at Rhododendron State Park and walk the wildflower trail to see and smell the fragrant flowers in continuous bloom. Keep exploring the small towns and back roads of this picturesque place and you'll get lost in time.
