The Northern Highlands include the upper section of the Andes, Quito, and The Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve. Pululahua is a Quichua word that means “cloud of water” or fog and is the name of a collapsed volcano surrounded by forests with great biodiversity and unique geological formations. Quito was founded in 1534 on the ruins of an ancient Inca city and, and along with Krakow, was the first city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
