Southern Maine Coast

Though sunshine and sand aren’t normally synonymous with Maine, the Southern Coast is bursting with both. Miles of white sand, inlets, islands and blue sky are the overwhelming attractions. Beach bums aren’t the only ones who flock here, however. The region’s rich blend of history, architecture, art and nature offers a little something for everyone. Visit the old homes of sea captains and shipbuilders, tiptoe through ancient cemeteries and tour 17th-century public buildings. Spend an afternoon gallery hopping, sailing or hiking through the dramatic trails of East Point Sanctuary. Get in touch with your spiritual side at St. Anthony’s Monastery near the Kennebunk River. Though monks still occupy the great house, the sculpture and shrine-scattered grounds are still open to the public. Amusement parks, fishing shacks, lighthouses and shopping outlets fill in any remaining gaps for the ultimate, all-inclusive vacation.
