- Bustling tropical city where both making things, preserving the culture and ecotourism are equally important. You can fly direct to Manaus from Atlanta (Delta) or Miami (TAM). TAP flies to Recife and you can pick up an internal flight from there. Most other flights go via Sao Paulo, occasionally Rio. Boats: Manaus us also accessible by recreo passenger ferry from essentially anywhere in the Amazon, but you are most likely to come in from Belém (5-6 days), Santarém (2 days) or Tefé (2 days). For the last two there are speed boats that are safe, but can be quite exhilaratingly jolting in rough weather. You can also come down the Solimões from Peru`s Iquitos or Colombia`s Leticia, which are marathon journeys, and only for the dedicated. Road access to Manaus is limited. Apart from new local connections to cities immediately south (Manucaparu and Iranduba) and east to Itacoitiara, the only big road out with a decent surface you can drive on all year, goes north to Venezuela. In doing so it passes through such good tourist spots as Presidente Figuerero and Boa Vista before crossing the border at Santa Elena. Its doable in 12-hours if, en route, you stop nowhere and have a flask of really strong coffee with you (the road is arrow-straight for almost all of the way)

- Tefé is 2-3 days by riverboat from Manaus, and 12 hours by fastboat. There are also direct flights to Tefé from Manaus (Trip airlines), which takes 45 minutes, and should cost around RS300 one way (cash-conscious travelers often go up by boat and fly back). Flight operate most days. Book in advance at the Trip website. Access to Mamirauá is from Tefe, but you cannot just turn up there, as visitor numbers and placements are controlled as part of the management plan. Organize permits and placements either via your tour operator or from the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá office (but call ahead first) or from the website.

- Small city festivals. All the places mentioned below are best reached from Manaus. Presidente Figueredo is 90 minutes by bus from Manaus (27 reais one way), while 4 hours and 25 reais get you to Itacoitiara. Busses leave from the same central bus terminal (the Rodoviaria) in Manaus. To reach Barcelos and Maués you need a riverboat. It's six hours downstream to Maues (Manaus Moderna marina) and 24 hours upstream for Barcelos (Porto São Raimundo). In both cases booking is best done by simply going there and asking.
