Introduction
35 miles E of New Bern
North Carolina's third-oldest town, Beaufort (pronounced bo-fort) dates back to 1713 and still reflects its early history. Along its narrow streets are two 200-year-old houses, and more than a hundred houses are over a century old. On the last weekend in June, residents open their homes for the annual Old Homes Tour. Beaufort lies on the Taylor Creek waterfront, where a boardwalk with restaurants, shops, and piers offers pleasant strolling.
