Introduction
This medieval town, 26km (16 miles) east of Heidelberg, is known as the gem of the Neckar Valley. Overlooking the town and the river from a fortified promontory is the 18th-century Hirschhorn Castle. The castle defenses are from the 14th century, and wall paintings from that period can be seen in the chapel. The castle is now a hotel and restaurant. For a view of the sharp bend of the Neckar below the town, climb to the top of the tower.
