Long Melford has been famous since the days of the early cloth makers. Like Lavenham, it attained prestige and importance during the Middle Ages. Of the old buildings remaining, the village church is often called "one of the glories of the shire." Along its 5km-long (3-mile) High Street is an array of one of the greatest concentrations of antiques shops in Europe. There are many private homes erected by wealthy wool merchants in the area, the two stateliest being Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall.
