Introduction

190km (118 miles) S of Stuttgart, 143km (89 miles) SE of Freiburg

Like the towns of Italy's Lake District, this village on the northern shore of Lake Constance cascades in terraces down the hillside to the water. The heart of Meersburg is a pedestrian area. You can drive into town as far as the Neues Schloss, where you must leave your car and continue on foot. In the center, the streets become narrow promenades and steps wander up and down the hillside. From the dock, large and small boats set out for trips on the water. Many watersports are available. One charming feature of Meersburg is the town watchman who still makes nightly rounds, keeping alive an ancient tradition.
