Introduction
106km (66 miles) S of Munich, 18km (11 miles) SE of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 37km (23 miles) NW of Innsbruck
The year-round resort of Mittenwald, in a pass in the Karwendel Range, seems straight out of The Sound of Music. Especially noteworthy and photogenic are the painted Bavarian houses with overhanging eaves. On the square stands a monument to Mathias Klotz, who introduced violin making to Mittenwald in 1684. The town is a major international center for this highly specialized craft.
