Introduction
Golden beaches and the sweet nectar of fermented grapes are the sirens that lure most travelers to this slender strip of Long Island. Though close to the Hamptons, the attitude is completely un-Hamptons; South Forkers refer to this area as "upstate."
Thank goodness. Right now it's a laid-back playground that's quaint, beautiful, and completely unpretentious. Wineries just took root out here less than 30 years ago, and Long Island wines are growing in recognition -- and numbers. There are now 23 places to sample them. But this tiny tract of flat, beachy turf is also a great place to just relax. With a couple of bold new restaurants, the culinary scene on the North Fork is definitely picking up, though this area still can't compare to the South Fork in its range of dining (and lodging) options.
