Penticton Travel Guide

Located at the southwest tip of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia's sunny Okanagan Valley, Penticton provides the perfect getaway for summer and winter vacations. The South Okanagan's arid climate lends itself to year-round recreation, making Penticton a major destination for summer and winter escapes.
Penticton's name is linked to its First Nations history. Ancestral home of the Penticton Indian Band, the flatlands that surround the city once served as hunting grounds for its First Nations. The city's name relates to the area's geography as "the place where the waters pass by (forever)." Many locals however, fondly refer to Penticton's name as evidence that it is indeed "the place to stay forever."

Within easy driving distance of Apex Mountain Resort, the city is a magnet winter enthusiasts. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and backcountry exploration are all major attractions here. Apex's Nickel Plate Nordic Centre's expansive backcountry is a favourite destination for cross-country skiers.

During the summer and fall, Penticton's beaches and parks are the place to be, although the Okanagan's wine festivals and scenic diving tours attract world wide attention as well. Penticton restaurants are excellent venues in which to sample the Okanagan's award-winning wines. The city is also on the circuit for international music performances and is an ideal location for enjoying the area's rich artistic heritage.
