Introduction

310km (192 miles) E of Bangkok

The capital of Trat Province is Trat, hitherto regarded as the gateway to the Koh Chang Marine National Park. Because of the region's new, improved direct transport links, though, visitors can now head straight to any of three piers to access the park's many islands, and it's becoming less of a gateway. A single, looping, cliff road runs along 90% of both coasts but doesn't yet link the whole island.

Despite having Marine National Park status, many of the islands here have been subjected to large-scale developments. The largest, Koh Chang (Elephant Island), is no exception. For years it was purely a foreign backpacker and Thai weekend getaway, but now, with the opening of Amari Emerald Cove in 2005, a more upscale international clientele is visiting. A luxury marina and condominium complex at Klong Son Bay is planned, a new Dusit Princess resort (tel. 03955-8055) opened in late 2007, and a super-deluxe Soneva Kiri will open on isolated Koh...
