SAN FRANCISCO, CA: NileGuide, the go-to website for great travel recommendations and custom trip planning, today announced the acquisition of Localyte’s platform and community for an undisclosed amount. Featuring original travel recommendations from a community of tens of thousands of content contributors around the world, Localyte offers users access to local insights into the best travel experiences available in any destination, straight from those who know best. On the Localyte website, users can ask informed locals anything from “what’s the best craft market in Guatemala?” to “what’s the most romantic restaurant in Helsinki?” to “where can I find a good hiking trail outside Cape Town?”

The key assets acquired in the deal include the Localyte website and underlying technology platform, the large and growing community of member contributors, and the Localyte iPhone app, Pocket Sherpa. NileGuide will be integrating elements of the Localyte functionality into the NileGuide website, while also maintaining the Localyte website.

“We’re committed to creating high-quality original travel content by tapping into expert local knowledge around the world, and this acquisition helps us accelerate that strategy,” said NileGuide CEO Josh Steinitz. “In addition, by offering Localyte content contributors access to the larger NileGuide audience, we’ll ensure their recommendations create real value through visibility to hundreds of thousands of new users.”

Likewise, Localyte founder Guillermo Baensch commented, “We’re excited to bring the Localyte model to a great company with best-in-market travel planning tools and offer the Localyte community exposure to a large and growing audience on NileGuide. We believe NileGuide is at the top of the class of the emerging crop of web 2.0 travel players, and we’re excited to be a part of their growth.”

NileGuide is building out a network of “Local Experts” in top travel destinations around the world, and plans to use the Localyte community to extend and scale their ability to create original content and recommendations for thousands of smaller and off-the-beaten-path destinations, while also supporting content freshness and originality in their existing top destinations.
