After a horrific year battling cancer at the age of 43, one woman decided to celebrate her newly established health…but for a cause. Dennise Shepherd, of the United Kingdom, will participate in a sailing challenge to raise  donations and awareness for breast cancer.

On June 19th, four nominated charities will take part in the 50 nautical mile course on the Isle of Wright. Each of the four charities will use identical Beneteau Oceanis yachts as they navigate around the course.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer and fighting for her life for eight months, Shepherd decided to do give back. Shepherd says she remained motivated in her fight against cancer based on all of the advice and information she received from Breast Cancer Care. Enthusiastic to pay it forward, Shepherd decided this nautical challenge was the perfect option since she was already an established dinghy sailor. To date, Shepherd has already raised 4,000 English pounds for the charity.

Dennise said, “I knew it was something I would like to do and I am really, really looking forward to everything about it… the sheer spectacle will be incredible.”

With 16,000 sailors and 1,700 boats participating, Dennise is sure to witness a spectacle beyond her wildest dreams. And if you are anywhere near the Isle of Wright off the English Channel, be sure to check out this wonderful event with an even better cause.
