Road Train Cars Successfully Tested

The newest breakthrough in the movement towards autonomous driving, the first public test of futuristic “road train” cars—conducted on a highway in Spain—was a resounding success. Road train cars feature not one, but three unmanned vehicles following a truck with a human driver. The lead truck is networked to the three cars such that they mimic its trajectory, acceleration, and braking.

The project—called SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment)—is meant to allow commuters to relax, work on their laptops, or even nap while a computer does the driving for them. Stateside, Google is preparing to expand their own autonomous driving tests beyond the Bay Area to Nevada highways.
