NileGuide Expert tip:

From the small piazza near the steps to the church, follow the pathway away from the road for a beautiful hike around Ravello or down to Castiglione.

Description:

This church is dedicated to the Saints Cosma and Damiano, two brothers who lived in southern Turkey in between the 3rd and 4th centuries. They were both doctors who treated patients without accepting payment, and they died as martyrs under the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. The sanctuary now dedicated to these saints in Ravello is a modern structure dating from the 1970s, but it has been a popular pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages. The church is built into the stone cliff side and is an impressive work of contruction. From the large terrance near the entrance, you can see the displays of the many ex votos brought in honor of the Saints Cosma and Damiano.
