Perhaps retro isn't quite the right word. This isn't a new place hearkening back to the gritty backpacker days of the 1970s with some eclectic recycled decor, rather this is an original meet-up spot that has survived since then. The nearby Malaysia Hotel was once the equivalent of Khao San Road, a backpacker magnet known well all over Southeast Asia. Wong's Place was the only bar in the neighborhood. Sam the owner is the brother of the late Wong the founder and keeps this classic watering hole alive after support from around the world came in flowers and sympathies when Wong passed away. Expect a nice selection of drinks on the cheap. Walk in and stumble out. Free live music on Saturday nights and a lot of VHS music videos.
