Upriver on the Chao Phraya just north of Bangkok, Koh Kret (or Koh Kred) is a small island community dominated by Mon tribes. The Mon once controlled central Thailand and spread Theravada Buddhism throughout Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). Though they are now assimilated, elements of the culture survive on Koh Kret. A stroll through the small market and hopping from one pier to the next is a nice day or half-day of exploration. Informal tours on small boats circle the island. Stop in at one of the pottery studios and see the Mon art form in action or buy a piece to take home. Be sure to try the local desserts and other foods which is really a primary part of the visit. A pottery museum is open weekdays from 9 to 5 and a few temples show more of a Burmese style. Arriving is part of the adventure. Go to Nonthaburi pier (Number 30) on the river and haggle for a group rate for a long-tail boat with other travelers, or take a bus, minivan, or just a taxi from there to Pak Kret and take a ferry across to the island for a couple of coins. A Chao Phraya Express tourist boat travels here every Sunday at 9 a.m. from Central Pier for a day trip that costs around 300 baht.
