The University of Maine Museum of Art features an extensive contemporary and traditional collection that has earned it a "must see" designation among those touring the Bangor area. On its website, the museum states that its goal is to educate the public "about diverse histories and cultural meanings to be found in our visual culture." It seeks to achieve this objective by offering viewers more than 7,000 original works created by masters such as Winslow Homer, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, and Roy Lichtenstein. The museum's warm and inviting design encourages visitors to linger over its many masterpieces, making for a classic art museum experience. While admission to the museum is free, workshops featuring instruction in everything from watercolors to digital photography are well worth experiencing. Special exhibitions are also worth checking out for art lovers.
