Valentine’s Day, or San Valentino as it is called here in Italy, is just around the corner. Do you have a date yet? How about a romantic dinner spot? If you’ll be traveling in Italy during San Valentino this year, the romance of Amalfi might just draw you to the Amalfi Coast to celebrate this lovely day of love. (Sorry, I’m a romantic and get easily carried away…) Certainly the towns of Amalfi and Positano have an undeniable romantic appeal during the summer months when you can dine by the water and walk along the beaches. Although winter is very different, it can be a peaceful and quiet time to visit the Amalfi Coast. If you’re looking for a secluded getaway for Valentine’s Day, the seaside town of Amalfi might just be the right choice for you.
So where should you dine on San Valentino? During any other month of the year, I would suggest you visit our Top 10 Romantic Restaurants in Amalfi Guide to find just the right spot for your evening out. Yet, as I’ve mentioned recently, February is a month of holiday in Amalfi, when many of the town’s shops and restaurants are closed for the month. You may have heard of the August holidays in Italy when most restaurants and businesses close throughout Italy. But that’s one of the busiest months on the Amalfi Coast since all those Italians on holiday head to the beaches. So I like to think of February as the ferragosto of the Amalfi Coast. Does that mean you won’t be able to find a restaurant open during this month? No! There are always a few excellent restaurants that stay open, but they often change each year. So if you’re planning on visiting the Amalfi Coast for San Valentino, it’s always a good idea to phone ahead to make sure your favorite restaurant will be open. And to make reservations!
Where should you go for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner in Amalfi in 2011? Here are some of my favorite choices in a number of different categories so you can find the right one for your special date.
Valentine’s Day is one of the special days each year to really enjoy a romantic dinner out, and one of the best spots in Amalfi to go all out is at the Ristorante La Caravella. One of the finest restaurants on the Amalfi Coast, you can expect an excellent dinner worth the extra splurge!
Although you’ll be dining inside instead outside on the pretty terrace, the Ristorante Lido Azzurro is always a charming spot in Amalfi. Located right on the harbor of Amalfi, this restaurant is romantic choice any time of the year.
If you’re looking for a restaurant in Amalfi for San Valentino that is full of charm and offers a good value, consider dining at the Ristorante La Taverna Del Duca. Located on the pretty Piazza dello Spirito Santo in the historic center of Amalfi, the restaurant has a cozy interior dining area and a menu with dinner options for every budget. They even make excellent pizza!
While I love many of the restaurants in Amalfi, the Trattoria Dei Cartari is one of my favorites – one that I return to again and again. I’ve also heard from quite a few visitors to Amalfi who returned to this restaurant many times during their stay in town. When a restaurant is that good, why go anywhere else? Located near the Piazza dello Spirito Santo, this restaurant has a small interior dining area for the winter. You might want to call ahead to make a reservation for Valentine’s Day dinner.
Have a Cheap Date
Want to take your date out for a romantic evening without breaking the bank? Stop by the Ristorante Il Tarì, where you’ll find excellent regional cooking at a great value. The table settings are elegant and the service is friendly. Pizza is often the most affordable and delicious option at any restaurant on the Amalfi Coast, and it’s good here.
