Nile Guide Bangkok: Photo Friday

You probably won’t find this dish on the menu at your hometown Thai restaurant but a whole assortment of little creepy crawlers are available for snacking. Locust, large beetles — you have to peel off the carapace to get at the “flesh”– ant eggs, spiders, grubs and bamboo worms all offer a nice dose of protein and in the poor rural areas the can make up a significant part of the diet. In Bangkok you might find street carts with them. I had one of these little worms and though mentally I was freaking out, the honest truth is it tasted a bit like a soft roasted nut. Be that as it may, I quickly gargled with Coca-cola.
