Beijing’s Top City Publications

It is easy to find information about Beijing once you arrive, even if you do forget your Lonely Planet guide book on the airplane. If you haven’t already, try the NileGuide trip planner tool. This allows you to make an online itinerary (can’t leave that on the airplane!) that you can customize based on your own interests.

CityWeekend Beijing is a great monthly publication available at most major hotels and western restaurants. The magazine specializes in short articles about upcoming events, specials, ongoing deals and a brief directory. Their online sit is informative, although a bit lacking when compared to the city’s other major publications. CityWeekend does, however, have a nice series of features in their print publication that is well worth exploring if your duration in Beijing is more than brief.

The Beijinger is a monthly publication that is the go-to for local insights, intel and listings. No expat or English-speaking local goes around without this virtual Beijing Bible. Their online sight offers the easiest and most vast directory as well as the largest classifieds section in Beijing, including jobs, housing, events, directories, specials, blog and more. As far as an all-inclusive city publication goes, the Beijinger is tops. You can pick up a copy at any major hotel or restaurant. If you are new in town, a great place to look for one is Sanlitun Village, which is where you’ll want to head for a meal or drink anyway, or ask at your hotel reception.

Time Out Beijing is a great publication for the more witty and vague goings on around Beijing. You’ll find insightful articles that are well researched and quirky. I like it for its comical tone and great selection of feature articles that are informative as well as well thought out. Instead of random reviews on the latest opera performance in Beijing, Time Out does a special comparison on who has the best breakfast buffets. Now THAT’S useful information! As with the other publications, pick one up at the nearest international hotel or major western restaurant.

You’ll find all the information you need online to plan your trip ahead of time at NileGuide Beijing, but if you want to supplement your NileGuide itinerary, these publications may have some insight.
