Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is expanding if you didn’t know. Home to the works of Michelangelo, Donatello and Ghiberti will be getting a 25 million euro makeover. The architects in charge of this expansion is Adolfo Natalini, Guicciardini and Magni which is said to be completed in 2016. The project will double the museum in size to 5,250 square meters. An expansion of exhibition space into the adjacent Teatro degli Intrepidi, also known as Teatro Nuovo, which is one of Florence’s oldest theaters. This is a big step for the L’Opera del Duomo to house ancient and contemporary art, such as Ghiberti’s Doors of Paradise and the other two doors of the Baptistery which are not currently on display. There are plans to renovate the rooms that have the Pieta` by Michelangelo and Maddalena by Donatello. There will be a new room constructed called Sala dell’Antica Facciata and will present a reproduction of the twelfth-century facade of the Duomo by Arnolfo di Cambio.
