Clocks & Pubs Spring Forward March 27th

On Sunday, March 27 England’s clocks move forward one hour marking the beginning of British Summer Time. While we do lose an hour, the added light at the end of day is always warmly welcomed as ee shed all those black wool coats and emerge from our wet winter hibernation. Restaurant outdoor seating pops up as quickly as our daffodils do, even if a scarf may still be required. London’s parks also begin to fill with sun worshippers and picnickers. But probably the return of the pub garden is the most eagerly awaited anticipation of the season. Socializing over a pint of lager or a glass of wine is what Londoners do best and we do it even better outside. Below are a few of our favorite beer gardens to spend a lazy afternoon in London.

The Thames from the balcony at The Old Ship

Fulham’s White Horse on Parson’s Green not only has an impressive beer menu of cask, draught and 135 bottled beers, but an enviable position on Parson’s Green which draws the fancy local set. The pub hosts several beer festivals each year and weekend bbqs when the sun shines. Just follow the crowds when exiting the Tube station.

Along a pedestrianized strip of the Thames river bank in Hammersmith is the The Old Ship, an ideal viewing spot for peaceful river traffic. Grab a balcony inside the pub if possible although there is no lack of outdoor seating, perching on the river wall is even permitted.

Notting Hill’s Windsor Castle pub has a somewhat secret garden, hidden is more like it. The pub’s interior is really cool, if a bit claustrophobic, with the low ceilings and doorways designed for elves. Mind your head and make your way through the pub to the garden entrance. A shelter and heaters are provided if the weather won’t cooperate; Londoners sometimes like to pretend it is springtime.
