Nashville is known for many things, but the most talked about are Honky Tonks. According to most definitions, a Honky-Tonk is a cheap, drinking and dancing establishment. If you ask anyone that has been in one, they would also add: fun, loud and the perfect place to let your hair down. There are no pretenses here-what you see is what you get!

Most locations will have a live band playing (with the ever present tip jar being passed around), a smiling bartender that will be your best friend by the end of the night, and a dance floor full of happy feet. What you won’t find? A cover charge. That’s right, no legitamate Honk-Tonk will ever charge an entrance fee. And if you are lucky, your favoite country music artist just might be in town and stop by to hang out or even sing a few tunes to the rowdy crowd.

So here are the top 10 Honky-Tonks in downtown Nashville-in no particular order:

  1. Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge
  2. The Stage
  3. Legends Corner
  4. Second Fiddle
  5. Layla’s Bluegrass Inn
  6. Robert’s Western World
  7. Lonnie’s Western Room
  8. The Station Inn (sometimes a cover charge-call ahead)
  9. Rippy’s Smokin’ Bar & Grill
  10. Wildhorse Saloon (cover charge after dinner hours on select days-call ahead)
