Cementerio Central

NileGuide Expert Says:

If you peer around the tombs carefully you'll find a whole mausoleum dedicated to the Masonic Lodge from the area.

NileGuide Expert tip:

Take a taxi to and from the Cementerio Central since the area nearby is decidedly sketchy.

Description:

We're not trying to make a goth of everyone, but special consideration should be lent to the Cementero Central to history lovers and those with an interest in architecture. Built more than two centuries ago by the architect Pio Domínguez, this cemetery is considered the most important in the country. Here lie the mortal remains of former presidents, writers, poets, and political leaders. On halloween the National Police give a guided tour of the tombs and the tales surrounding the notable figures interred here which is well worthwhile. Come down midweek - take a taxi to and from the cemetery since the area around here is pretty seedy - and amble your way through the ornate mausoleums and tombs that really chart Bogota's rise as a capital city.
