Description:

For hikers seeking the thrill of higher elevations, but don't necessarily want to struggle with exhaustion upon reaching the summit, Mt. Eisenhower offers an excellent compromise. Because the Edmands Path trail leading to the peak of this mountain ascends gradually, it is fairly easy going and accessible to many types of hikers. The trail itself is generally smooth, with few tree root or boulder obstructions. The exertion required to travel this path is moderate and, as such, enables hikers to focus more upon the glory of the deep woods that surrounds them. Nevertheless, this hike does require some degree of physical conditioning -- those not used to extensive mountain hikes would do better on a less ambitious route such as Mt. Willard.

One note of warning: near the summit, it is necessary to cross over a rock field - take care making your way over this treacherous ground. Just before reaching the peak, hikers will come upon one of Mt. Eisenhower's most distinctive features - a domed rock. The trail winds its way up the rock to the summit itself. On the peak, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of all of the larger Presidential mountains -- Adams, Jefferson, Madison and, of course, Washington.

To reach Mt. Eisenhower, travel on Route 302 to Mt. Clinton Road (look for signs for the Cog Railway). Turn right (if traveling from North Conway) or left (if traveling from I-93) onto Mt. Clinton Road. Travel about 2.3 miles and look for the parking area on your right. This is a White Mountain National Forest parking area so a fee of about $3 - $5.00 per car is required. Edmands Path is clearly marked toward the far end of the parking area. More information on this hike is also available at the Appalachian Mountain Club's Highlands Center in Bretton Woods (which is situated on Rt. 302).  This is a great hike and well worth the effort!
