Description:

Under the Buda Hills is an extensive system of caves carved into the soft limestone by Budapest's numerous underground thermal springs. The Pálvölgyi Cave is the second most extensive dripstone cave in Hungary with a length of 19km, and is considered one of the most beautiful. It is located in Paul Valley, under the Hármashatár Hill where another cave, the Szemlőhegy Cave can also be found. Even though it is most widely known for its dripstone formations, its high-ceilinged narrow passages and rounded shapes eroded by hydraulic action are also very characteristic.

Of its 19km, 500m is open to the public, along where the guided tours take place. The cave is open every day excluding Mondays, with tours lasting approximately one hour. The paved section of the cave can be visited in casual clothing, though comfortable footwear is advisable. The unpaved sections require special caving gear including helmets and headlights. The temperature of 10 degrees Celsius is constant throughout the year so warm clothing is advisable in the summer.
