Off the Beaten Path Cabo San Lucas

Day 1 - Cabo San Lucas

The Mexican Inn is one of the sweetest hidden gems Cabo has to offer. You'll feel like you're in a more relaxing version of home in this safe, quiet and clean B&B, except for the wonderful Mexican decor and artwork. Although set slightly outside of downtown, you'll still be in walking distance of most of Cabo's main sights. Set out for a stroll around downtown after you check in. There are lots of fascinating little art studios and fun shops to investigate around the Town Square. A number include some authentic historical crafts, like the art seen at the Huichol collection, a small museum that focuses on an old traditional art. Also fun to check out downtown is the flea market by the docks, chock full of crafts and trinkets from local artisans. Try lunch at one of the largely undiscovered authentic Mexican restaurants in Cabo, La Casa del Dorado. The sampler plate is always a good choice, as you'll get some classics but also get to try something new. Family run, the flan here is to die for. After lunch set out for a hike in the desert north of the city, where there are amazing unique flora and fauna. Take a guided tour or just rent a car and ask the hotel owners about hiring a local guide, and head north to explore this beautiful ecosystem on foot. For another great authentic meal in the evening, El Restaurant de Dona Lolita has some of the best tacos you'll ever eat.

Day 2 - Cabo San Lucas

Get up a bit early and walk down to the Mercado Municipal to chow down on some freshly made deliciousness served up at the little food stalls here. You'll probably need to relax by the pool for a little while afterwards to absorb, but then head out for the Canyon Canopy Adventure to get another perspective on the Baja desert. Guided and maintained by a responsible eco-tour company, this is a safe yet exhilarating way to get a birds-eye view. When you arrive back into town in the afternoon, the Toros bullfights are a fun and exciting way to take part in one of Mexico's oldest cultural traditions in a much more humane way. The combination of the colors, music, and flamboyant atmosphere will make this one of your more memorable Mexico experiences. Relax after with a cocktail on the terrace at Villa Serena, which features an amazing ocean view and has amazingly fresh seafood right out of the water.

Day 3 - Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo

Rent a car or hire a driver in the morning to drive north of town to visit the little village of La Candelaria, one of the few spots in the area where people live at least somewhat untouched by the tourist crowds. Bring a picnic lunch from the hotel, so that when you get back into town you can set off right away for a snorkeling excursion with Andromeda Divers, one of Cabo's many diving/snorkeling outfits but also one of the oldest, most respected, and most entertaining and enjoyable with their outgoing and knowledgeable guides. Try the snorkeling in the Cabo Pulmo National Park, where there are some picturesque reefs full of sealife. After this long and active day, get spoiled during dinner at La Casa del Pozo, where the food and the service make you feel like you're in someone's home rather than a restaurant. The seafood here is particularly good, too.

Day 4 - San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas

Grab another picnic lunch in the morning and take a taxi to the Estero de San Jose, a wildlife sanctuary filled with hugely diverse bird species and other creatures. The best way to see the estuary is to rent a kayak, and head out onto the water for some better views. In the afternoon, explore more of the surrounding country on an ATV, which allows you to travel far enough on a short trip to be able to reach some natural springs that are perfect for a swim to cool off before heading out again. Back in town, try the simple and fantastic barbeque at Parrillada, where you can just walk by the grill to see what looks best. With tons of salsas and sides to complement your grilled delicacy, you'll have a casual and truly delicious end to your Cabo vacation.
