Description:

The most important thing to do in Celestún is visit the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, also known as Natural Park of the Mexican Flamingo. A boat trip through the Reserve – an especially great excursion for kids – brings you close to spectacular flamingo hordes strutting in shallow water, eating constantly, and sometimes taking flight. While the pale pink and bright orange flamingo population gets the most attention, there are over other 300 bird species in Ría Celestún, including Mexican natives such as the Yucatán Wren and the Sheartail Hummingbird. Lurking crocodiles call Celestún home, too, as do 234 mammal species. From the Parador de la Playa on the beach, numerous guides will take you in their small boats for a two-hour cruise through the reserve. Also visited are the fresh-water swimming holes of the Valdiosera and Cambay Springs, Sand and Bird Islands, and the eerie stumps of a petrified forest.
