About 60 kilometres from Chiang Rai, on the bank of the Mekong River is a small town was once one of the major cities of the Lanna kingdom. A must see for anyone interested in the history of the region, Chiang Saen is a small and charming town with a colorful past. It served as the capital until 1262, when King Mengrai established Chiang Rai and is older than both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Evidence of this rich historical tapestry can still be found in Chiang Saen, where traces of the old city walls remain along with ancient temples and antiquities. If you are in the area, a visit to Chiang Saen Lake is also recommended. It is located 5 kilometres south of Chiang Saen along Highway 1016. In winter this one square kilometer lake is home to many types of water birds.
