The Lizard King's Mexican Restaurant in Puerto Viejo is a low-key place to get high-quality Mexican food, and is easily the best fare to be found in town. Most of the Mexican standards are on the menu, and sometimes there are chef specials from all corners of the globe, like Ecuadorian shrimp guiso, Asian style fried rice, and delicious cheeseburgers. Cozy wood booths and minimal decor make a fine backdrop for the colorful plates, which are all cooked to order in the open kitchen, where you sneak a peek of the chef at work making chimichangas or stuffing a Lizard King Burrito, a bulging tortilla topped with guacamole and lots of fixings. Don't expect a quick bite here, since everything is made to order from scratch and sometimes take awhile, though not by Puerto Viejo standards. The homemade chips and salsa are an excellent complement to the fresh squeezed margaritas, and the ceviche is well worth the wait. Entrees are generous enough so you'll probably be too full for dessert, but rich chocolate cake for dessert might be worth saving room for if you have a sweet tooth.
