Address:

Costa Rica, Costa Rica

NileGuide Expert tip:

If it's clear, wear sunscreen; you can get a burn in an hour or less. If it's not clear it can be nearly freezing, so bring a warm sweater or jacket.

Description:

This national park is popular among Costa Ricans and tourists for its amazing views of and from the volcano. Volcán Poás is active, though its last major eruption was in 1954, and it releases sulphuric gases from its crater. Visitors to the park enjoy hiking along the trails to the mountain and lake. There is also a Visitor's Center with educational displays and a coffee shop. There are regular connections from San José to the park. It's best to visit the volcano in the morning hours, when the visibility is best, and weekends can be very crowded, so visit mid-week if you have the chance.

Admission is $US 7 (half price for students with Identification) Open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There are no accommodations in the park, but most hotels in San Jose offer day trips
