Description:

The Trochita was part of a much bigger vision for rail lines that would run throughout Argentina, connecting Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Unfortunately, after WWI most of the projects were abandoned except for the line connecting Buenos Aires with Esquel, Patagonia which had passenger service throughout the 1950s.

Economic downturns throughout the 1960s and 70s led to the service being discontinued, and in 1992, the last remaining section (beween El Maiten and Esquel) was scheduled to be closed. Later, citizens rallied on a local and then national level to keep the line running as a symbol of "the Old Patagonia," and it still runs as a tourist train today. The schedule is infrequent and often changed with little notice, so calling or emailing the office is definitely recommended.
