Tips and reviews

Here's what Trippy members say about Herculaneum:

"Use the same train to visit the superb Roman sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum and drive or use the bus to travel the Amalfi Coast, visiting Positano and Amalfi."  See More

"If you want somewhere not in the 'top three' I'd suggest you consider fascinating (and foodie) Bologna or Bergamo, with its historic upper and lower towns, Como, with its options for exploring the lake settlements, Naples which is stuffed with history and has easy access to PompeiiHerculaneum and Capri."  See More

"The Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius make a great day trip (Pompei and Herculaneum) and you'll remember them for the rest of your life."  See More

"The archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompei are just off the road between Sorrento and Naples."  See More

"It is also nearest to Pompei and Herculaneum (both of which are unmissable if you haven't visited the area before)."  See More

"Hello Amir 1. I assume you are travelling around by train? Use the official Italian railway website in English to find train times, details and fares: . :"  See More

"Yes, you can take the Circumvesuviana train and it's very easy (and cheap) to do so. Pompei Scavi - Villa Dei Misteri station is directly opposite the site entrance. Circumvesuviana trains are more like overground Metro carriages than long-distance trains. They are not in any way 'dangerous' but carriages can get very crowded at commuter and school/college times (Circumvesuviana trains are commuter trains). Take normal commonsense precautions against pickpockets and petty thieves. You can catch the Circumvesuviana train from either Porta Nolana station or from Napoli Garibaldi station, which adjoins Napoli Centrale station. Napoli Centrale is a very largeTrenitalia station which also houses Circumvesuviana and Metropolitana stations. To find Napoli Garibaldi 2. Walk through the station concourse. Napoli Garibaldi is signed ' Circumvesuviana' within the concourse. 3. Pompei Scavi Villa dei Mysteri station is on the Napoli > Sorrento line. Pdf timetables for both Porta Nolana and Napoli Garibaldi on the official site here: ."  See More

"Visiting all these places in just 10 days will inevitably mean you see very little of them, so do be prepared for that. You could very easily spend all 10 days in Florence or Naples alone. The five villages of the Cinque Terre each have their own railway station and, if you wish, it is easy to see them all in just one full day using the train from e.g. a base in La Spezia. Trains are frequent. Florence deserves a minimum of two full days. Naples deserves an absolute minimum of one full day, just to see just its historical centre. Seeing any more needs more than one day. You can see Amalfi and Positano in half a day each, if you're happy to rush around and the bus times from Sorrento work ok. See below for transport details and info: Other than a very few private and commuter lines, you can find almost all Italian train times, details and fares in English on the official Italian railway website: . :"  See More

"Amalfi, Pompei, Herculaneum(more developed for tourists than Pompeii)."  See More

"Sorrento is also a perfect base for day trips by car to Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Naples, Paestum, Herculaneum, and Pompei."  See More

"Then I'd head up to Naples, but I'd focus on the Amalfi Coast and Pompei and Herculaneum rather than the city itself."  See More

"You have Herculaneum and Pompeii just a short train ride away."  See More

"Plus, if the water becomes too much for the kids, PompeiHerculaneum and (more excitingly) Mount Vesuvius are nearby."  See More
