"Yes, you can take the Circumvesuviana train and it's very easy (and cheap) to do so. Pompei Scavi - Villa Dei Misteri station is directly opposite the site entrance. Circumvesuviana trains are more like overground Metro carriages than long-distance trains. They are not in any way 'dangerous' but carriages can get very crowded at commuter and school/college times (Circumvesuviana trains are commuter trains). Take normal commonsense precautions against pickpockets and petty thieves. You can catch the Circumvesuviana train from either Porta Nolana station or from Napoli Garibaldi station, which adjoins Napoli Centrale station. Napoli Centrale is a very largeTrenitalia station which also houses Circumvesuviana and Metropolitana stations. To find Napoli Garibaldi 2. Walk through the station concourse. The five villages of the Cinque Terre each have their own railway station and, if you wish, it is easy to see them all in just one full day using the train from e.g. a base in La Spezia.
