Ponte Hercilio Luz

Address:

Ponte Hercilio Luz, Centro
Florianopolis, Brazil

NileGuide Expert tip:

Although there's not a whole lot to do, per se, around the bridge, it's an important monument of the city's history

Description:

Little-known fact: the city of Florianopolis is actually divided between a section on the mainland and one on the island of Santa Catarina (often referred to simply as "Florianopolis" itself). The city's crucial link, until 1982, was this suspension bridge opened in 1926, liberating Floripa's citizens from dependence on rickety rafts and helping establish the city as the capital of the state of Santa Catarina. Since being closed due to safety concerns, the steel construction has served as a post card and icon of Florianopolis.
