The Delfinario Sonora is located between San Carlos and Guaymas facing the Sea of Cortez. The facility is in itself a fantastically beautiful natural tourist destination with views of the sea, desert and mountains.The facility was a longtime dream and finally opened in 2006. The faciility is not a SeaWorld style toursit attraction; in contrast its focus is on the amazing dolphin-assisted therapy for children with neurological and motor problems. The dolphins provide a unique therapy for children with autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy among other conditions including depression and stress disorders. Studies show the interaction with dolphins has an enormous positive effect on the patient. This therapy is called Dolphin Assisted Therapy (DAT) and it consists of interaction with dolphins guided by a trained therapist. It can improve self esteem and socialization, reduce aggression and hyperactivity and increase sleep quality.
For the visionaries at the Delfinario Sonora, the entertainment and tourist attraction of the facility definitely takes a back seat to the therapeutic benefits of the facility which can be "priceless."
Nevertheless, the facility is a great stop for family entertainment for children of all ages! The Shows are educational with fun added! First, there is the table of touch, where you can examine shells and vertebrates of different marine mammals and learn about them from their skeletons.
The Dolphin show focuses on the dolphin's natural abilities and personalities along with how they go about training and caring for them. And of course, the finale includes some incredible leaps, dives and jumps from these magnificent creatures.
The Sea Lion show is also educational and interactive, where you can learn about these mammals while experiencing the charm and sense of humor that the sea lions can display.
They also offer a truly one of a kind experience as you can "swim with the dolphins." OK. So, technically you are not swimming with them; however, you can get in the pool with them and touch them and get a dolphin greeting kiss!
