Description:

The Perlas del Mar de Cortez pearl farm was established in 2004 as a private venture by a group of Mexican Investors. Three of these were the original founders of the research project which was an experimental project known as "Perlas de Guaymas" which began in 1996 and was funded by ITESM (Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey).

Actual pearl culture research began in 1991 and in 2000 they harvested their first commercial harvest of pearls. They now have registered brand, "Perlas del Mar de CortezĀ®" which are authentic Gulf of California Cultured Pearls and they have attained worldwide prestige.

The Pearl Farm is situated on the shore of the absolutely gorgeous Bacochibampo Bay (which means "Bay of Sea-Snakes" in the Yaqui Indian language yikes!) The farm includes the "Palapa" or Dock - where most of the worker's labor takes place, the Lab the oysters are actually seeded to produce pearls, and under the sea lays the actual farm where the pearls will be produced. The Pearl Oyster species grown here are the "Panamic Black-Lipped Pearl Oyster" and the "Rainbow-Lipped Pearl Oyster". These pearls may be produced in an array of brilliant colors of opalescent white, grays, bronze, greens, blues, violet and to the intensity of jet black.

The history of pearls in Mexico is a long one as the Yaqui Indians searched for pearls in ancient times. More recently, pearls were the New World's biggest export prior to gold and silver mine exportation. In its day, the value of pearls exported from Mexico to Spain exceeded all other exports combined and the Americas were once known as "the lands where pearls come hither".

Today, you may purchase handmade jewelry of silver or gold and pearls, custom designed by well-known artists from Guaymas, Mexico City and Monterrey at the local gift shop. They have a second gift shop at the Guaymas Cruise ship dock, which is only open when a cruise ship is in port.

Do not miss the opportunity to tour and explore this working Pearl farm while you are in Guaymas or San Carlos!
