Description:

Cathedral of the Assuncion (or Assumption) is located at the other end of the Plaza Zaragoza. Another building of grand architecture, it is much more eclectic in its styling. It has been described as having "decorative elements of the neoclassical and Gothic.

The construction of the cathedral was initiated in 1777 when a first small chapel was built on this site. The story is that is had decayed to a point that the local people pleaded to have it replaced. According to research, a first stone for the current building was placed in 1861. And, there it sat until 1877 when the building could finally be constructed. The Cathedral as it stands today, with its two towers, was not completed until 1912. This finished building with all of its columns, niches, tiers and arches looks like an elaborate wedding cake.

Hermosillo is a state capital and the center for Sonora history, tradition and culture. Nowhere will you experience this more than a visit to the Plaza Zaragoza and it surrounding spectacular buildings.
