Description:

The State of Sonora's Government Place was built in 1881 using the labor of the local Yaqui Indians and the stones from the Cerro de la Campana, a rocky mountain in the center of Hermosillo. It is described as having a "sober neo-classical façade". Its most memorable feature is the large clock tower.

The inside of this palace holds beautiful tropical gardens, arched walkways and grand staircases. The building was officially inaugurated in 1906.

The palace walls are covered with a series of historical murals. Actually, the murals are a more recent addition, having been painted between 1982 and 1984 by three artists, Teresa Moran, Enrique Estrada and Héctor Martínez Arteche. The murals depict compelling scenes from Sonora's history.

The Palace is considered the "people's house" and the murals are memories of Sonora. The walls capture the identity of Sonora and the often violent and wild history of its people. The murals represent a great human project which tells stories of birth and destruction, war and peace, a constant theme of fire the artist's view as a part of Sonora's history as fire represents not only destruction, but also a purifying element. The murals seem to be a work in contradictions, such as history often is, with its victories and revolutions.

Each mural is a part of the theme of Life and Death. One artist says of the murals, "strangely there are many dead here, but it is a celebration of life."

Hermosillo is a state capital and the center for Sonora history, tradition and culture. Nowhere will you experience this more than a visit to the Plaza Zaragoza and it surrounding spectacular buildings.
