Stratford Shakespeare Festival

NileGuide Expert Says:

Canada has a stunning array of theatre talent, and much of it can be found on the Stratford stages during the summer. The production values are extremely high, and some of the shows are worth seeing for their sets and costumes alone. If you have any love of theatre at all, Stratford is a must-see.

Description:

There is something for everyone at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Don't worry if the Bard isn't your thing, the Festival puts on a wide variety of shows including contemporary and classical plays as well as a few musicals. They mount more than a dozen productions every summer in their four theatres. The season usually runs from June through September, but previews can begin as early as April and some of the larger productions on the main stage run through October.

Stratford is about two hours west of Toronto by car, and is also reachable by train and bus. The town is very pretty in the summer, with its quaint shops and swan-filled river, and there is good antiquing in small towns nearby. It is well worth planning a summer weekend getaway if you're in Toronto for any length of time.
