Description:

Originally known as Cine Teatro Tivoli, this former picture house dates from 1924. Movie classics were screened on a weekly basis and included King Vidor's Duel in the Sun and The King and I starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner. Wim Wenders world premiered his Lisbon Story here in 1994 although by this time the building had fallen into disrepair and was actually closed for refurbishment. Reopened in 1999, the Tivoli is now a lively performance arts venue and is a firm fixture on the city's diverse cultural calendar. The three-level auditorium can seat 1,100 people and retains its modernist design features that were drawn up by Portuguese architect Raul Lino in the early twenties. Classical music concerts, ballet, and light opera are frequently staged, but the theatre is also known for promoting a more contemporary sound. The annual Super Bock Em Stock winter music festival is co-hosted here. Check the website for listings.
