East Los Angeles

In the early twentieth century, East Los Angeles was a popular destination for Russian, Jewish, and Japanese immigrants along with a significant Mexican population. By World War 2, East L.A. had become almost exclusively a Mexican-American community and hasn't changed much since those early days. The "Eastside"—Los Feliz, Silverlake and Echo Park—is not to be confused with East Los Angeles, which is east of the Los Angeles River and includes neighborhoods such as Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, and Boyle Heights.

The 1990's brought a wave of gentrification to pockets of East L.A., most predominantly Eagle Rock, Atwater Village, and Highland Park. Many films and TV shows like Glee and 500 Days of Summer were filmed in East Los Angeles. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote their Oscar-winning film "Good Will Hunting" when they were roommates at Occidental College.

If you love beer, check out the Eagle Rock Brewery in to enjoy unique, artisanal beers and special beer-tasting events. Check out the Atwater Village Farmer's Market for a great selection of vendors offering fresh fruit, vegetables, and other products.
