Description:

In August 2011, Bardstown Road got an all-vegetarian and vegan restaurant when Huong "Coco" Tran, owner of Frankfort Avenue's Zen Garden, opened Roots and its neighbor, Heart and Soy. The two share a kitchen and are connected by a doorway. Roots, whose motto is "Mindful, compassionate cooking," offers table-service and a menu with a greater choice in soups, salads, and "savories". Though marketed as the more up-scale of the two restaurants, nothing on Roots' menu exceeds $9. For those looking for a faster dining experience, Heart and Soy offers delivery, take-out, and order-at-the-counter and dine-in. Their menu fits on one, tall chalk board and ranges in price from $3-8. Try the steamed bun ($3), jicama rolls (two for $5), and pad thai ($8). The restaurants make their own soy milk and tofu, so make sure your order includes some kind of soy. Heart and Soy offers delivery to the Highlands, Crescent Hill, Nulu, Clifton, Germantown and Butchertown neighborhoods (although delivery is by bike and may depend on the weather).
