Description:

The Crescent Hill reservoir and Gatehouse opened in 1879 as the first step in the water purification process and today still play a key role in producing Louisville's drinking water. The reservoir is a settling basin where sediment from the Ohio River settles before the water moves to the next part of purification. Valves in the Gatehouse control the flow of water in and out of the reservoir.

On Wednesdays from May through September, the Louisville Water Company offers "Walking Wednesdays," opening the Gatehouse for public tours. Tours happen between 10 AM and noon, and 6 and 8 PM and are open to adults and children above 8.

A three-quarter-mile path surrounds the reservoir and is open from 7 AM until nightfall year-round for walking and running. Benches line the path, and signs on the lamp post provide information on the history of the Louisville Water Company and information about the city's water.
