Description:

El Oco, an experimental museum in Mexico City's central San Rafael area, rightly calls itself a "meeting place for the arts." Temporary exhibitions, performances, and artists' residencies take place at Museo Experimental El Oco.

Conceived, designed and opened in 1953 by a Mexican painter and sculptor – the German-born Mathias Goeritz – El Oco's birth was guided by such artists as painter Rufino Tamayo and architect Luis Barragan, with whom Goeritz also collaborated on monumental abstract sculptures like Towers of Satellite City (1957). Barragan's influence is seen throughout the building, which is defined by its simple planes – blocky yet graceful – and avoidance of 90-degree angles in the construction. Goeritz died in 1990 and the property languished until it was purchased by UNAM and reopened in 2005.

Guided tours are available by previous appointment. The Monumento de la Madre dominates the park across from El Oco.
