Description:

The Santa Maria La Ribera neighborhood, located north of Paseo de la Reforma, hosts a weekly outdoor market on Thursdays – it's almost exclusively for locals but outsiders are always welcom. One block of Calle Ramon Lopez Velarde is blocked off and packed with vendors selling fruits and vegetables all piled in tempting displays of color, shape, texture, and smell. Taste figures in, too, because the merchants are happy to give you a sample.

If you are still hungry afterward, try the tlacoyos at Antojitos Mexicanos El Guero – these are thick, grilled blue corn tortillas filled with beans or cheese, then garnished to your taste with sauces of nopal or spinach and topped with cream and more shredded cheese. Wash it down with the most ancient of drinks: atole. This is a traditional hot Aztec morning beverage made of pureed corn, here served "pinole" – with sugar and cinnamon.
