Description:

Want to stay somewhere literally off the beaten path?  Consider booking a night the Garnet Mountain Fire Outlook tower at the very top of Garnet Mountain, south of Bozeman.  There are several scattered throughout the forests of the Rocky Mountains, but this is the only one in the Bozeman area--with spectacular aerial views.   Getting there is half the fun:  you will have to hike, atv, ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile in from 4-10 miles (depending on the season).  And considering the place is in the middle of the forest, the accommodations are quite nice.  There are bunks, table and chairs, dishes, cooking stove, and an actual flushing toilet.  You will need to bring your sleeping bag, pack in all your water, and haul out all your trash.

The efforts are well-paid with seclusion, unbeatable views of the Gallatin National Forest, and a true Montana adventure.  All for only $30 a night!  There is room for four, and you can explore the entire area when you stay up to five nights.

Since there is only one fire outlook tower, you will want to book early.  They take online reservations up to six months in advance, and sometimes you can arrange a last minute reservations by calling the Bozeman Ranger Station.  There are also a few Forest Service cabins available in the area.
