Description:

Referred to as the North Gateway to Yellowstone National Park, the town of Red Lodge gains its reputation from the wild days of the Old West. Sundance Kid is said to have robbed a bank here, and Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill Cody were previous guests of the town during the 1800s. But Red Lodge's true history was made by the coal miners who came from all over the world to work in Montana's mines. Irish, Scottish, Finnish, Italian and Slavic workers flocked to the Beartooth Mountains – and other parts of Montana – to find work.

Today Red Lodge is known for its year-round recreation opportunities and its historic, carefully maintained 19th-century homes. Organized by the Carbon County Historical Museum, Red Lodge's walking tours take the visitor back to the early days of Montana.

The museum can also provide a list of other self-guided tours, which include stops at the area's National Historic Places, a drive along Carbon County's breathtaking Beartooth Highway, churches, and the mines and oil fields that once drew immigrants to Red Lodge.

While you are at the museum, don't forget to take a look at their many exhibits on the Old West, Native Indians and the pioneers that founded Red Lodge, Montana.
