Coastal Recreational Trail

Address:

Monterey,

NileGuide Expert tip:

Best traveled on a sunny day. Bring a jacket or windbreakers because even when the sun is shining, winds bring a definite chill. If you can find a parking spot in the residential area and take the trail into Cannery Row and downtown, you'll avoid the unfortunate headache of trying to find parking in the more populated areas.

Description:

All told, the Coastal Recreational Trail is 18 miles long, stretching from Pacific Grove to Castroville, an inland town and the "Artichoke Capital of the World." While it's certainly possible to trek the whole 18 miles, most opt to join up with the paved path at various points, especially where it runs into Cannery Row. Bicyclists, roller bladers, dog walkers, joggers and walkers all share this path. It follows the curvature of the cliffs at times, and almost always offers a panoramic view of the Bay and all the wildlife and ocean adventurers in it. It's a beautiful way to stretch your legs and burn off some of the clam chowder you just downed, and a perfect place to take some wish-you-were-here pictures.
